Thesis Statement: Uniting the temporal and spatial dimension through architecture

Time as a reference point to understand events

The role of duration in temporal experience

The role of specious present in temporal experience

The role of order in temporal experience

The role of change in temporal experience

Thesis Intent

Exploring the temporal dimension through architecture

The mechanism of time: It works in sequence unfolding each event after an interval (duration)

The subjective time gradually progresses and becomes the part of universal time.

In architecture, time can be experience by discontinuity of events or variation in the spaces

The space-time idea varies due to the change in perception

The timeline: cyclical, linear, infinite...

Temporal dimension narrates an event, a story, a philosophy or building tech in form of achitecture

The unreal 4-dimensional objects

Experiencing time in architecture

FROM SPACE - TIME TO TIMELESS ARCHITECTURE

A building is made up of other spaces within it that transform and change, even if its built form remains fixed. The idea of the mobility of building and within building is based on its transformation or metamorphosis function.  Building is not only a space which we use, but it’s like an organism which grows through experience. However, the notion of time which is distinct from the notion of space has always been puzzling and perplexing to architects. Einstein’s notion of “space-time” and their central focus on the notion of event. It incorporates space-time and observer in a relational framework. Theory of Relativity proposes that events designated as space-like or space-time-like or time-like depending on their speed is always to be seen with reference to a self relative to another. Similarly, in architecture the spatial dimension is mundane if we don’t consider the experience part of it.

Timeless architecture embraces a different metaphysic and a different approach to architecture. It considers the space as a module for present and future. Everything which we design is in fragments which can transform and give a new identity to its existence.

Architecture has taken a new turn. It is no more a rigid, stationery discipline. The new high-tech buildings move and give a new meaning to its existence each time you experience it.  The moving image is the medium that inherently combines space and time through sound, image, motion. The moving image has the potential to present memories, simultaneous events, and expectations in a fragmentation of time and space that is not linear. This presents us with the ability to create new multidisciplinary architectures that combine data, light, sound, motion, sensor technology, structure and location into an entirely new environment, potentially a "moving architecture".

In the case of moving or dynamic architecture where each spatial dimension depends on external entities, the observer needs to take all things in account to create an image to store in brane. If any of the entity modifies the brain will need to rectify the pre existed image by experience all the entities.

INTRODUCTION

This thesis examines the fourth dimension of architecture, the temporal dimension. Many studies have shown that people have a deeper connection with built spaces and its experience which changes with time. Architectural works are evaluated on their newness or heritage, respectively based on their degree of functionality or historic image. The question arises that can architecture better provide the user with rich sensations of time? Can it modify the perception of user by providing him/her an experience which they didn’t experience before? How does user develop perception about the space and what role does time play in achieving that perception? Such questions provided the ground for this thesis. I have tried to find the connection between temporal and spatial dimension and the notions attached to it. This thesis examines the works and ideas of several individuals in order to formulate a design methodology that engages a broader spectrum of this temporal dimension.

It is hard to understand the 4D notion in 3 dimensional world. Time itself present different perceptions in mind of different users. This thesis is a study of human perceptions and their experiences. The idea is to develop an architecture which complies with the notion of time and gives a new experience each time user experiences that space. We can design in a manner that heightens the awareness of layered model of space bound with time and by unfolding each layer at a time we can create multiple experiences of the same space.

A new trend is emerging in architecture today: dynamic and time-like architectures that are capable of moving, flexing and reconfiguring themselves. Its conceptualization of architectural space is undergoing drastic innovation. Architect-designers have become perceptual painters of conscious experience through the use of digital technologies that permit the sensorial intensity of an experience of movement, color, form, and space.

Architects are considering 4th dimension time in designing the spaces. Time-like architectures can be static in manifestation but not in design, or they can be kinetic in both design and manifestation. They can respond to local or remote parameters cybernetically and synchronously in real-time, or asynchronously in delayed time. Timeless architecture can be physical or virtual or anything in between. The concept that the Universe may have more than three spatial (or four space– time) dimensions dates from 1917 when Peter Kaluza suggested that electromagnetism is really an extension of the gravitational field into a fifth dimension of space. This theory was supported by Einstein and Bergmann (1938).

RESEARCH IMPETUS

‘Living in the Fourth Dimension of Architecture’ – Time was the very basic element which had great influence on me while studying history of architecture. The era and different architectural movements presented a variety of thoughts based on contextual need and ideas. It was great to know that as human behavior changes with time so does his shelter and work spaces. I always had a keen interest in civilization and the role culture play in developing the mindset of people over time. Architecture is an important part of this change. People have a deeper connection with built spaces and its experience which changes with time.

The question arises that can architecture better provide the user with rich sensations of time? How does user develop perception about the space and what role does time play in achieving that perception? Such questions provided the ground for research. In recent years, we have experienced that the only thing which is certain about architecture is change and the transformation of the space is bound to this idea. Time itself present different perceptions in mind of different users. This thesis is a study of human perceptions and their experiences based on temporal dimension – Time.
